Cat Palm
(Chamaedorea Cataractum)
The Cat Palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) is a lush, trunkless species that brings a dense, tropical feel to any indoor space. Unlike many other palms that grow tall and spindly, these stay low and bushy, making them a favorite for filling empty corners.
Climate & Light
Cat Palms are native to Southern Mexico and thrive in warm, humid environments. They prefer temperatures between 70°F and 80°F and require bright, indirect light.
Watering Routine
This is a moisture-loving plant. While most houseplants like to dry out between waterings, the Cat Palm prefers to stay consistently moist.
Water as soon as the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch.
The Tip: Ensure the pot has excellent drainage; while they love water, they are susceptible to root rot if left sitting in stagnant "wet feet."
Interesting Fact
In their natural habitat, Cat Palms are rheophytes, meaning they grow along the banks of streams and even in the midst of running water. Because they evolved to survive flash floods, their root systems are incredibly tough and flexible, designed to anchor them firmly against rushing currents.
